Meet Nicole! Nicole started with us a little over a year ago and I have to say that I was unsure if our program would be something that would fit in her ‘workout regimen’. A little timid and someone who did not seem that comfortable with weights, she has proved me wrong. She WILL finish the WOD. She WILL try new things. She WILL make progress. I love seeing her confidence grow in lifting heavier and conquering fears. Nicole’s schedule only really allows her to come to the 6am so a Nicole sighting can be rare. So read a little and get to know a great athlete!!
Nicknames? Cole, Running Ninja
Tell us a little about you and yours? Up until a few years ago, I thought “working out” was my weekly trip to yoga. At the insistence of my sister-in-law, I signed up for a 5K and started running again for the first time since grade school! From there, I started working out regularly and felt great. There were so many health benefits and it really boosted my self confidence in my physical abilities. I started CrossFit because I wanted a new challenge for myself and wanted to find out what the buzz was all about.
Occupation? Marketing Communications
What do you do on your off time…Hobbies/Interests/sports? I love to travel. We live in such an amazing place with so many activities literally in our back yard, so I enjoy exploring San Diego and day tripping, but also love to travel internationally. I also really enjoy reading. It’s a nice escape to delve into a good book and there are so many great reads out there – the sky is the limit!
Words you live by? One of my favorite quotes: “You may have a good mind, sound judgment, and a wide reach of thought and views, but you will never be distinguished without SEVERE APPLICATION.”
What is the biggest accomplishment you are most proud of? I just recently achieved a 1 rep max that exceeds my bodyweight. For me, that’s a big deal!
My current goal is…. a WOD at 100% Rx, followed by a handstand push-up and a real pull-up.
When did you start Crossfitting? June 2012
Do you remember your first WOD? First thoughts? I remember the first Fundamentals WOD being a challenge, but manageable. It felt great. However, when they released me into the wild after I finished Fundies, I was scared to death of what those WODs would look like. The one thing I love about CrossFit is the ability to modify, and knowing that we’re all working on improving in one area or another. So my first post-Fundies WOD was actually not as bad as I thought it would be.
What is your favorite workout? Hmm, there have been so many good ones lately! These days, I love anything with box jumps. They used to scare me to death but thanks to the support of the coaches, they don’t intimidate me so much anymore.
What movement/workout makes you want to run out the door the minute you see it on the board? Overhead squats, but one day I hope to add them to my “favorites moves” list once I can get better at them.
What is your favorite unhealthy food? Man Candy (I can’t make this stuff up) from Ignite Bistro, and Dim Sum at Jasmine.
What is your favorite healthy meal? Rip’s breakfast bowl (Engine 29). I can literally mix it up with any fruits I have on hand and it gives some variety. I also experiment with adding chia, hemp hearts, and different grains. It’s an awesome breakfast that really fuels you up.
Crossfit in your own words? Crossfit is the one workout I never get tired of. Teena works so hard at making sure we have great programming so the moves are never the same and I never get tired of the activities. There is always something different, and the workouts are created with specific goals in mind, so I know there is always a method to the madness.
What keeps you coming back? The coaches and my fellow Crossfitters. It really has become like a family. With boxes popping up all over, there are plenty of other places that might be cheaper or closer, but you have to enjoy your coaches and the people you work out with or you will be miserable. I love seeing everyone – and miss them when I’m traveling for work – and that’s what keeps me coming back.
What music or song gets you really motivated to do the workout? I like my tunes a bit aggressive with a good beat, but I’m really all over the place, and enjoy everything from Kansas to Five Finger Death Punch to Skrillex.
What is something that others may not know about you? Eventually I’d really like to get a CrossFit trainer certification.
Any successes at SCF you’d like to share? Every day seems like a new success for me. The coaches continuously encourage me to try my hardest – especially when I think my hardest is a lot lighter than they know I am capable of. SCF has made me feel stronger and healthier than I ever imagined and the positive energy has been such a blessing to me.
